The Stars are Right for Cthulhu in London

The waft of primordial terror creeps slowly towards us as we prepare ourselves to take SAN rolls before investigating Yog-Dominic-McDowall, the Starspawn of Jon Hodgson and the King in Tartan that is Stuart Boon from the depths of Cubicle 7.

The reason? They are infecting Kickstarter with another outing from their fevered minds. This time the target is London.

Cthulhu Britannica: London aims to provide plenty for investigators to get their teeth, claws and tentacles into during the roaring 1920s in the old city of London.

And so we open tentatively the great tome of esoteric questions and ask Dominic and Stuart about their already successful Kickstarter project.

A Gloranthan fly in the HeroQuest ointment for its 25th edition

Well, we were all up for reliving our childhood with the hope of obtaining the 25th Anniversary edition of HeroQuest. The updated version was on Kickstarter and though many of us asked the question "Are there not copyright thingys to sort out?" there had been assurances that they were.  Now it seems there is a Gloranthan sized glitch involving a Cease and Desist from Moon Design Publishing.

Battle Systems gives Wee Gamers the background scenery

There is a nice wee kickstarter up at the minute from Battle Systems.  Battle Systems is a sci-fi and fantasy system designed to create detailed interiors that can be used with a wide variety of role-playing tabletop game systems.  These designs are downloadable which you construct yourself.

The guys behind Battle Systems have found their line is popular with hobbyists but they decided to make something easier for gamers who don't have time to build their sets from scratch.  So they designed a line of terrain which is easy to assemble with no painting, gluing or cutting required and is ideal for many game systems including Warhammer 40K, Infinity, Mercs, Zone Mortalis, War Path, Star Wars Minis, Deadzone and Pandora. It's also ideal for non-sci-fi systems such as Achtung! Cthulhu :)

Wee Gamers caught up with Wayne and Colin from Battle Systems and tied them to one of their own control panels and tickled them until they spilled the beans.

Behind the carnage at Karnak - Sentinel Games give a sitrep to Wee Gamers

It is the year 562, the Age of the Diaspora. Humanity, established in hundreds of worlds throughout the known universe, is fighting for survival against cruel alien races, and even against each other, confronted by disputes that appear increasingly absurd. One world after another is engulfed by the fury of the war while the contenders fight ruthlessly to prevent Total Extinction

Wee Gamers delve into Infinite Crypt with James Wallbank

We all love terrain.  Its the 3D map we always want to have to wow our friends and move our little toy soldiers over.  And of course many companies have done their best to facilitate our fascination for terrain.  Its is the mainstay of wargaming.  They have even let us play inside by giving us hallways, rooms and doors.  And in this regard Infinite Crypt are no different but different at the same time.

We tracked through the secret columned passageways of the Infinte Crypt to find James Wallbank, the man behind this terrain and its Kickstarter

Godslayer goes Free to Download

Megalith Games has announced that the Godslayer core rules is now a free downloadable PDF in ENGLISH and GERMAN.

Megalith Gsmes said "After all the trouble with the GERMAN translation and printing of the books, we felt that we heavily owe our supporters a "quick" solution. So while we are still all waiting for the printed versions of the GERMAN rulebook, we wanted to give you the chance to start reading the rules right now and that´s why we offer the GERMAN rules for free download! Of course we did the same with the ENGLISH version so that no one is in any disadvantage. The downloadable PDF contains the complete rules on 110 pages! This will allow everyone to get a good look at the game and decide for yourself if you are joining the ranks of the fanatic Godslayer players all over the world!"

Can't say fairer than that.  Go and download the rulebook now and get yourself up to speed.  You can also download the quick-start rules as well.

All Ireland Flames of War Tournment

We had the absolute pleasure to host the Battlefront All Ireland National Tournament at the weekend and there was a fantastic turnout.  As far as we know it was the largest tournament gathering of Flames of War players on the the Island of Ireland with a grand total of 16 attending.  Not content with that the tournament attracted not only players from Ireland and Northern Ireland but also players from England and as far away as Denmark!!

Out of the 16 lists 11 were Allies and only 5 Axis with the largest being American lists.  Though there was a Canadian list with a little off-board help from a naval bombardment

Round one

Round two

Round Three

The big results

1st - Padriac O'Confhaola - The first "All Ireland Flames of War Champion"
2nd - Richard Flood
3rd - John Gallagher
4th - Ulick O'Sulivan
5th - Daniel Stempien
6th- Brian McKenzie
=7th -Craig Owen
=7th -Johnny Fisher
=7th- Brendan McGee
10th - James Owens
11th - Soren Pendersen
=12th - Matt McVeigh
=12th - Johnny Millar
14th - Alan Bates
 15th - Chub
16th - Dale Wallace

And so after a hard days fighting, but with a 'Savage feed' to boot the final result gives us the first All Ireland Champion (and mucho bragging rights to boot) - Padraic O'Confhaola!

Everyone taking part got a goodie bag.  No Blankety Blank Chequebook and pen though
The Generals together.
John Gallagher - Third place
Richard Flood - Second place
The All Ireland Champion!!
Padraic pointing out how awesome he is!
A massive thanks to Scott, the Tournament organiser who masterfully steered the games forward, to all the players and we hoped you enjoyed your day, and to all the staff in Arthur Square Masonic hall who made the stay very pleasant indeed.

Many thanks also to
Battlefront - for believing we could pull this off and helping us with prize support
Battleboards - for helping with designing some of the material and creating some awesome North Africa boards to play on.
Dramascape - for helping us begin to create villages and being generally nice chaps
Emerald Model Terrain - for building a fantastic little bunker for the goodie bags.
Amera Plastic Mouldings - for some of the terrain used to build a fantastic airfield

Godslayer - one year on.

On 1st October 2012 Megalith Games finally saw their baby, Godslayer, born.  It was unbound from its chains and set loose upon an unsuspecting world.

Wee Gamers heard about this game when the Hairy Painter flaunted the kickstarter under our noses.  We thought, "Oh here, he's at it again." but when we actually looked we could not believe how beautiful the range was nor how polished the rulebook and background book was.

When we got our hands on some of the Godslayer "Stuff" we were really excited and just had to review it.

We have been taking this lovely game around Ireland to the different conventions and has been fairly well received.  We hope to see a few more people getting behind this game in the future.

And so we just wanted to say - Happy Birthday Godslayer!! :)

Wee Andy looks at Star Trek Attack Wing

It's safe to say that most fighting in Star Trek takes place in the games, the tv and movies had their spats of action but it was always the story which for most drove the shows forwards.

Now Star Trek based combat games are nothing new, but appeal very much to the wargaming fan of the franchise rather than as merchandise for fan boys to buy. Amarillo Design Bureau have the extensive and famous Star Fleet Battles and its host of spin off titles, but it's fair to say its a system for the dedicated.

Wee Andy looks at Kings Watch by Jeff Parker & Marc Laming

When we're not ripping open new games, painting miniature backlogs and generally having fun even we Wee Gamers still like to sit back and enjoy a good comic or two.

Something we don't get to do near as much as we'd dearly like, but recently we've managed to squeeze in a few titles we thought we might share with you, our loving followers and sometime commentators.

Wee Andy has been reading Issue 1 of  Dynamite comics' "Kings Watch" by Jeff Parker & Marc Laming. And he was especially pleased that he got the exclusive subscription edition with a cover by Ramóon K. Pérez.

Spoiler warning- it's unavoidable but to do justice we do let slip various elements of the story so skip to the last paragraph if all you wants a loose comment of closing and a score of sorts.

Wee Gamer adventures at Conclave

Conclave in Limerick was the latest convention we dandered of to visit this year and we had a ball over the weekend of 15 to 16 June.  Organised by Garry, owner of the Gathering, it was a definite homely affair being friendly, fun and full of gaming.

It is also one of two gaming conventions held in the beautiful city of Limerick which boasts having one of King John's castles and a long history.

Nights at the Round Table - they don't eat Spam a lot

Thursday night. Gaming night. and a new comedy is born onto the interwebs coming at you down a series of tubes.

Nights at the Round Table (see what they did there??) is a new webseries that started on 13th June coming from deepest North East England.

The style of comedy should be familiar to those who have watched Spaced (with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost).  And they hit the tone just right.

Wee Gamers are off to Conclave

Conclave is one of two gaming conventions that happen in Limerick, the other being BroCon.  Conclave is an independent convention like GaelCon where it is held at a location that is not a University and is supported purely by ticket sales and independent fund raising.

This year it is taking place from 14th to 16th June and Wee gamers are off to Conclave.

Wee Gamers first look at Deepwars

Antimatter Games' DeepWars follows on from their surface wargame ShadowSea, but takes game play to the bottom of a hidden ocean deep beneath the frozen wastes of the north.

We will talk about the game more in a separate article, but to try and set the tone for you, we've found DeepWars to sit somewhere alongside Lovecraft, Bioshock, Joules Verne, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Moby Dick - does that help?

Once again we get our interview helmets on to chat to an up and coming games publisher.  This time its with those lovely French chaps from Devil Pig Games.

They have been working away like, well, devils to get a very interesting World War Two game up of the ground, or on the ground, depending on your point of view.

The game? Heroes of Normandie. And it is on Kckstarter.  Here they get the 13 question treatment.

The Pad of Geomorphic Intent - a kickstarter

Who would have ever thought someone would bottle water and sell it to people who could just turn on a tap and get it there?

Repackaging graph paper and selling to gamers as something special is surely in the same league?  Well, not quite.  The Pad of Geomorphic Intent, or graph paper to you and me, is something a little bit more special than the graph paper you pick up at your local supermarket.

And is being kickstarted just to prove it can be done.

Rogue goes to Vapnartak

Vapnartak is a convention that sounds kind of Viking like.  And so it should as this show takes place in York, England.

Andrew Kinnear, Mr Rogue Miniatures himself attended the show in February and gave us a little account of his time there.

We think he enjoyed his time there. :)

Everyone needs a Death Star

Well it had to happen after the petition to Obama was turned down for a very special space defence platform.  Yup, they wanted the US government to build a Death Star.  Well, they did have a Star Wars programme under Regan..

So in the age of crowdsourcing, the great Internets is asking the ordinary punter to help fund such a dream through Kickstarter.

Mick Leach is just such a man.  He is the one at the helm of Eastern Front Studios, and has a Kickstarter for their Midgard line of miniatures.

After years of planning and tinkering their dreams are now close to being realised.  So join us now on our own adventure as we explore the mind of Mr Leach and find out what lurks below the surface.....
